The Art of Precis Writing

Precis writing is a skill that is required for academic and professional success and most importantly for competitive examinations. Precis writing is the art of summarising a given passage in a clear, concise and coherent manner. Precis writing involves reducing the length of the original text by about one-third while retaining its main ideas, tone, and style.

Precis writing can be challenging for many candidates, especially if they are not familiar with the rules and techniques of this form of writing. The following tips and techniques can help you improve your precis writing skills and score well in academic and competitive exams.

1. Read the passage carefully and understand its main theme, purpose and tone. You should be able to identify the central idea and the supporting details of the passage. You should also note the tone and style of the author, whether it is formal, informal, persuasive, descriptive, etc.

2. Write down the main points of the passage in your own words, using simple and precise language. You should avoid copying any phrases or sentences from the original text, as this is not an effective technique and may affect your exam score. You should also avoid adding any information or opinion that is not present in the passage, as this will distort the meaning of the original text.

3. Organise your points in a logical order, following the structure of the original text. You should use transitional words and phrases to connect your points and show the relationship between them. You should also use appropriate punctuation and capitalization to mark the beginning and end of your precis.

4. Compare your precis with the original text and check for accuracy, completeness and coherence. You should make sure that your precis covers all the main ideas and details of the passage, without omitting or altering any essential information. You should also make sure that your precis is coherent and flows smoothly from one point to another.

5. Revise your precis and edit it for clarity, brevity and correctness. You should eliminate any unnecessary words or phrases that do not add any value or meaning to your precis. You should also check your grammar, spelling and punctuation and correct any errors that you find.

6. Finally, give your precis a suitable title that highlights the main theme of the precis using fewer words.

Precis writing is a valuable skill that can help you demonstrate your comprehension, analysis and communication abilities in exams. By following these tips and techniques, you can master this skill and write an effective precis that will impress the examiners.

Teaching of Grammar

How To Teach Grammar Grammar is one of the core components of language, and it plays a crucial role in communication, comprehension, and expression. However, there is an ongoing debate among language teachers and researchers about how grammar should be taught in the classroom. Should grammar be taught explicitly, with clear rules and explanations, or implicitly, through exposure and practice? What are the benefits and drawbacks of each approach? How can teachers balance the need for accuracy and fluency in their students' language use? In our academic context, explicit grammar teaching is practised in English language classes from grade one to undergraduate education. I can safely claim that despite repetitive teaching of the same language forms and rules, many students fail to master English language skills. I will explore these questions and discuss the importance of grammar teaching in the current English language teaching pedagogy. I will also provide some practical tips and ex...

21st Century Skills for Pakistan

21st Century Skills  The 21st century is a time of rapid change and innovation, and teachers need to equip their students with the skills and competencies to thrive in a complex and uncertain world. Teaching and pedagogical skills are the abilities and strategies that teachers use to facilitate learning and foster student engagement, motivation, creativity, and critical thinking.  Pakistan's population is approximately 230 million people. According to the Pakistan Bureau of Statistics, about 64% of the population is under 30, and about 29% is between 15 and 29 years old. This means that Pakistan has a vast potential to harness its youth's talent and creativity and transform its economy and society through innovation and entrepreneurship. However, to realise this potential, Pakistan must invest in its higher education system and equip its graduates with relevant skills and competencies for the 21st century. The World Bank reports that Pakistan's gross enrolment ratio (GER)...

Reading Habits and Benefits

Reading is one of the most popular and beneficial activities people can engage in. Reading can improve knowledge, vocabulary, creativity, critical thinking, and mental health. However, reading habits vary widely across regions and countries, depending on culture, education, book access, and digital literacy. I am sharing exciting trends and statistics about reading habits worldwide based on recent research and surveys. Asia According to a survey by Statista 2017, China, India, and Thailand are the top three countries where people read books most frequently. In China, 36% of internet users reported reading a book every day or most days, and 34% read at least once a week. In India, 32% read daily or most days, and 40% read weekly. In Thailand, 30% read daily or most days, and 35% read weekly. These figures are far higher than the worldwide average of 22% for daily or most days reading and 31% for weekly reading. However, reading frequency does not necessarily translate into reading liter...
